Notice of Intended What?
Did you know, before you get married in Australia you must fill out your first legal document called a Notice of Intended Marriage or as us celebrant’s call it a “NOIM”. That’s right, before you are married you have to give at least one months notice and can be valid for up to 18 months before your wedding date.
You can find this document here. I’m so happy to help fill this out with you at our meeting. Or you are welcome to fill it out on your own. It can be done electronically or you can handwrite it out neatly and using capital letters.
The document then needs to be signed by you and your partner and witnessed by me, your celebrant (or another witness, such as a Justice of The Peace). It is then lodged with me, your celebrant.
There are two forms of identification that I need to see to fill it out and these are:
Evidence of your date and place of birth (i.e. passport or birth certificate),
Identity (drivers licence or passport) and finally,
If you have been married before, proof that your previous marriage has ended. If your previous partner passed, then a copy of a death certificate needs to be sighted.
But Millie, what if we want to get married next week?
If you are wanting to get married within one month, I can help you apply for a Shortening Of Time with Births, Deaths and Marriages in Queensland. Please note there are only five circumstances where a prescribed authority may consider a shortening of time. These are:
employment-related or other travel commitments
wedding or celebration arrangements, or religious considerations
medical reasons
legal proceedings
an error in giving notice
If you have any questions or need help filling out your notice, please do not hesitate to reach out to me and drop me a line at hello@millierose.com.au.
